Elite Nannies of Nashville is unique in many different ways. One thing that makes us different is the fact that we were preschool teachers for over half our lives. We have had the opportunity to help raise hundreds of babies, toddlers, and early preschoolers. We have what we like to call "receipts" as to what works when it comes to educating small children. Knowing what works and what doesn't work has served us well in having this nanny agency and serving the families in Middle Tennessee. One thing that we have considered a huge asset in educating children has been sign language.
We view sign language as a great resource! By saying and signing a word to a baby, it gives them the ability to communicate with you more effectively. Babies are extremely smart. They are retaining information at a rapid pace, and although they cannot tell you with words exactly what they want, being able to sign can ease any frustration on their part (and yours too!). Imagine feeding your six month old and having them tell you if they are full (all done) or if they are still hungry (more). Being able to communicate with your baby well into their toddler years saves both you and your child from misunderstandings and tantrums. It creates a more peaceful environment because everyone feels understood. Here are some tips for teaching your baby to sign:
- Don't give up! We believe that you can start sign language as early as you would like. Be consistent. Sign as much as possible, and say the word while signing. You will more than likely begin to see your baby sign back to you between 6 and 8 months old. Don't underestimate the power of your baby's brain. They are retaining quite a bit of information! (This is why many people begin teaching their children a second language very early. It's the best time to learn new things!)
- Pick 5-10 signs, and keep them in line with all of your baby's favorite things. Words like Mommy, Daddy, More, All done, Grandma, Grandpa, and Milk work perfectly! Add more signs as they get older.
- Get your nanny involved. The curriculum that we provide for our nannies has sign language made specifically for the nanny to do with your baby each day. It takes a village to raise a child, so why not bring in the reinforcements?!
- Praise your baby when you notice them signing! Imagine the confidence booster that this is giving your child at such a young age. Remember, the first 5 years of a child's life are the most important. A confident child will one day become a confident adult!
The results and benefits will be endless! Studies show that children who have been signing will learn to talk earlier, begin reading at an early age, and have a high IQ! If you are interested in learning more about baby sign language, and how we include it in our nanny curriculum, arrange a face to face meeting with us. We would be happy to sit down and talk to you about the benefits of having a nanny who can implement learning sign language into your child's day.
